The Rich History of Tattoo Art in Florence

While specific historical records of tattooing *within* Florence are limited, the city's artistic legacy undoubtedly influenced early tattoo culture in Italy. Giulio Tomasselli, owner of the first shop in Florence and one of the founders of the National Association of Italian Tattoo Artists, significantly shaped Florentine tattoo culture. His influence extends to numerous artists over nearly 30 years. Dragon Tattoo Studio, opened by Tomasselli in 1990, was the first in Florence.

Got my first two tattoos today at Bad Brothers in Florence and it was honestly the best experience ever!! I’m from Perth, Australia so getting tattooed overseas was a bit of a leap—but I’m so glad I trusted the process, because Alex (the owner and artist) was incredible. He has such a calming presence and made me feel completely at peace the whole time. There’s something really reassuring about the way he works—super professional, but also warm and easygoing, with a fun side that made the whole experience feel relaxed and so enjoyable. The studio itself has a great vibe—clean, welcoming, and just cool without trying too hard. Both tattoos turned out amazing, and I walked out feeling so happy, and already thinking about the next one. If you're in Florence and even thinking about getting a tattoo, definitely go see Alex. Couldn’t recommend him more 🤍

I got a tattoo here while in Florence on vacation. Camilla did an amazing job bringing my vision to life. She was gentle and extremely talented. I would highly recommend! From Start to finish, it was a seamless process. I am so happy with the outcome one. It’s perfect. For reference, this is my sixth tattoo.

I am so grateful I had the opportunity to meet and be tattooed by Alex. I contacted him on instagram and he responded in no time. I explained what I wanted and he gave me his available dates. We decided to get tattooed at the Reggio Calabria tattoo convention. I was super nervous at first but Alex quickly and effectively calmed me down. Over 2 days we did 16 hours of tattooing. While Alex is working he is hyper focused. We came in FIRST place! I highly recommend Alex. Not only will you get an award winning tattoo. You might also make a friend! Thank you Alex for an experience of a lifetime that I will never forget !

My husband and I both got tattoos done here by Gaia while we were on vacation! She is an INCREDIBLE talent and we would highly recommend her to anyone!! She's very kind and also has a gentle hand while tattooing! The shop itself is very clean and the other artists/people there are very welcoming.

Had an amazing experience here with all the staff! As soon as I walked in and started filling out paperwork, I was offered coffee! The artist I booked with was Alberto and he was so kind and attentive to detail. He made sure the design was exactly what I wanted and even explained the best way to adjust the cursive lettering to avoid fading/bleeding over the healing process. The shop itself is also so cute and comfortable, and the prices are extremely reasonable. Coming from the States, I’m used to shop minimum’s being at least $150, but I only paid €70! Can't recommend Noa Ink enough, especially Alberto! I will definitely be back the next time I’m in Florence

If you live nearby or are visiting in Italy, I recommend going here for tattoos. Perla is very precise and careful with her work, especially if you have detailing in the design. She is an amazing artist! This was my second tattoo and I already love it so much! I would 100% come back again.

Optimal Visiting Period

The best time to get a tattoo in Florence is during the shoulder seasons (April-May or September-October). The weather is mild, which is ideal for tattoo healing, and the tourist crowds are smaller, making it easier to book appointments and explore the city comfortably. Avoid the peak summer months (June-August) due to high temperatures and large crowds.

Plan your trip during this time for the best experience, considering weather, local events, and artist availability.
