Old English, or blackletter, lettering uses thick vertical strokes and sharp, broken curves. Try UnifrakturMaguntia, Pirata One, Grenze Gotisch, and Texturina. The style suits family names, short words, and Chicano or gangster lettering, which often builds on blackletter shapes. Because the letters are ornate, it works best for short words and phrases, not long quotes.

Cursive and script tattoo fonts

Script fonts join the letters and add loops and flourishes. Try Great Vibes, Sacramento, Allura, Alex Brush, Pinyon Script, Mrs Saint Delafield, Monsieur La Doulaise, Parisienne, Kaushan Script, Satisfy, Yellowtail, Dancing Script, and Pacifico. Script suits names, signatures, and short quotes. Thin hairlines and tight loops are the hardest parts to keep readable in a small tattoo, so ask your artist how large the letters must be.

Typewriter tattoo fonts

Typewriter fonts give every letter the same width and a printed look. Try Special Elite, Courier Prime, and Cutive Mono. They suit book and song quotes, dates, and coordinates. Typewriter quotes are often written in lowercase and end with a full stop (Stories & Ink, 2023).

Fine line and minimal tattoo fonts

Minimal lettering uses thin, simple strokes or a light handwritten look. Try Josefin Sans, Gruppo, Raleway, Cinzel, Playfair Display, Crimson Text, Amatic SC, Caveat, Shadows Into Light, Indie Flower, and Homemade Apple. These fonts suit initials, single words, and dates. Serif fonts such as Cinzel work well for Roman numerals. In a very small tattoo, narrow gaps between thin lines can close up over time, so leave enough space between letters.

Bold and old school tattoo fonts

Bold fonts use thick strokes that are easy to read. Try Rye, New Rocker, Sancreek, Smokum, Lobster, Abril Fatface, Permanent Marker, Bebas Neue, Archivo Black, Oswald, and Lilita One. They suit banners, traditional flash designs, and four-letter knuckle tattoos, a classic use of old school lettering (Stories & Ink, 2023).

How to choose a tattoo font

• Start with the text. Ornate script and Old English fonts suit names and short phrases. A long quote is easier to read in a typewriter, serif, or simple font.
• Check the small letters. Ink spreads slightly in skin over the years, and the openings in letters such as a and o can close up in a small font (Stories & Ink, 2023). Open letter shapes and wider spacing stay readable longer.
• Match the style to the design. Old English fits bold, dark work. Script fits soft, flowing designs. Typewriter fits quotes. Fine line fonts fit small, minimal pieces.
• Compare the same words in two or three fonts. Save a PNG and show it to your tattoo artist, who can adjust spacing, line width, and size for your skin and placement.

Tattoo lettering for names, dates, and quotes

Script fonts join letters and add flourishes. Serif fonts have small strokes at the ends of letters. Simple sans-serif fonts can help when you want fewer details. Compare the same words in several fonts before choosing.
